What do you do when you are injured? Usually I just curl up in a ball, whine and complain, and fill my face with junk food - woe is me!
This past weekend I tweaked my right knee. I can't tell you how I did it...I think it was playing with the kids? walking down the stairs? getting down and up from the floor? Anyway, it hurt! Ever notice when one thing on your body hurts you end up hurting other parts of your body because you are trying to avoid the original pain? Well, because I was trying to avoid hurting my knee any more than it was, I was throwing my hip out too. Jeez, the things that happen with your body as you get older.
So, yesterday while doing my Insanity Fit Test, I was fine until I attempted to do the Suicide Jumps. For those of you that don't know what that is...you start from a standing position, bend down put your hands to the ground, jump your feet back until you are in a push-up/plank position and then hop back up. There was an immediate sharp pain, followed by burning and throbbing. I immediately stopped that exercise and pushed through the remaining two tests.
Later in the afternoon I went and visited my chiropractor to adjust my knee, hip, back and neck. It felt a little better afterwards, and I then went home and iced my knee for a while.
This morning it was not doing any better, so I decided to skip my Insanity workout. It's funny how, it's only been two weeks, but it felt almost wrong NOT starting my day with Shaun T yelling at me to push through my workout, felt strange not to be dripping in sweat before I'd even had my breakfast.
With another day of rest, Ibuprofen and ice for my knee, I'm hoping that I can continue with my Insanity workout tomorrow morning. You can be sure that I will be sporting my new Ace Knee Support and taking it easy on the bending and jumping for the week.
I'm very proud to say that I didn't resort to junk food today...and tempting as it was. I was feeling down on myself for getting an injury so early in the game. Feeling like, yet again, I had failed. But I stuck with my diet and kept reminding myself that this was just a small set back for a few days. Reminding myself of the great work I had done already the last two weeks, and not to blow it all in one pitiful day.
How do you cope with injuries? Do you push through the pain? Do you stop and let your body rest? Or do you mope, pout and wallow? I know what I used to do...and I'm glad that I'm changing for the better :)
